The Ballad of Hazel, the Rabbit

(Sung to the tune of The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins)

In the middle of the downs
Near the county of Berkshire,
Was born a brave little Rabbit whom we all admire.
With his strong hind legs,
And his little button nose,
He lives in a rabbit hole and everybody knows him.

Hazel (Hazel),
Hazel, the Rabbit,
He's nearly one foot tall!
Hazel (Hazel),
Hazel, the Rabbit,
He's the bravest rabbit of them all!

Now rabbits are grass eating folks ya know,
They're never in a hurry and they take things slow.
They usually don't venture very far from home,
They just want to pass hraka and be left alone.
But one day Fiver said they had to go
On a perilous journey through the fields below,
To find a new down to replace their home
That he said would be destroyed 'cause his visions
told him so!

Hazel (Hazel),
Hazel, the Rabbit,
We've got to go away!

Hazel (Hazel),
Hazel, the Rabbit,
The "bad thing" will be here any day!

Well he taunted a cat,
He escaped from a crow,
He befriended a gull,
A bunch of does he stole,
He was chased by an army,
Floated down a river,
Defeated The Efrafans with a great big dog!

Hazel (Hazel),
Hazel, the Rabbit,
He's the bravest rabbit of them all!

Hazel-rah returned to Watership to retire,
That brave little rabbit whom we all admire.
There he lived many years and was very old,
When El-ahrairah appeared and he was told:

Hazel (Hazel),
Hazel, the Rabbit,
In my Owsla you belong!
Hazel (Hazel),
Hazel, the Rabbit,
We'd be glad for you to go along!

Go across the iron road to get back to the land.
