The Binary Lesson

The Binary Lesson
by M.L. Conner

"There are two types of people in this world: those who understand binary and those who don't."

Maybe you've heard this joke before, and maybe you were among those who got it. If not, here's a brief explanation. Binary is a computer language made of a series of zeros (0) and ones (1). Each digit represents a bit of memory that is either turned off (0) or turned on (1) - which is the meaning behind the |/O label that's on the power toggle switch on some pieces of equipment. These 0's and 1's are used to form groups of eight digits that represent a character, such as a letter, number or symbol. For example, my initials would be: 01001101 01001100 01000011. So, the point of the joke is that everyone either understands binary (1) or they don't (0), with the meaning of the joke being understood only by those who know how binary works.

Not too long ago, I saw a variation that said "There are 10 types of people...." I'll let you think that one over, but the point of it now is that it got me to thinking about a spiritual application. There are also two types of people in a spiritual sense: those who know Jesus Christ as their personal savior, and those who do not. This does not mean to imply that those who have trusted Christ are in any way superior. Anyone who has turned to Him in repentance will tell you it's all about what Christ has done for us, and not about anything good in ourselves. Titus 3:5 - Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.

This dichotomy of the human race will exist for eternity. Once in eternity future, there will be but one thing that will matter - during your life on this earth, how did you answer the question that Pilate faced: what will you do with Jesus? Nothing of your accomplishments, wealth, good works, or prestige will count for anything toward your eternal destination. Eternal life is made possible only by turning to Christ and accepting His gift of salvation made possible only through His bearing the penalty for your sin upon Himself as He offered Himself on the cross.

If you know you have never received Jesus personally into your heart and life, why not do so today? God says that today is the day of salvation. We are not guaranteed a tomorrow, and time is running out on this age of grace. Pray to God this minute and confess yourself a sinner, ask forgiveness, and ask Jesus to come into your heart and life. As a wise preacher once said, don't wait to be found guilty on the Judgment Day, settle out of court today! God has done the hard part and made a way, you just have to be willing to accept.

A million years from now, which of the two categories will you be in? Those who had placed their faith in the Son of God, or those who never did? John 3:36 - He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him."

Jesus, I know that I'm a sinner.
I confess my sins to you now.
I accept the payment of your shed blood on the cross.
Please forgive me and come into my heart today.
Amen.
